Tip of the Month
With all the ‘Tebow’ talk that has surrounded the last few months, I came across a nice documentary on ESPN that covered the period between his last snap at Florida and draft day. Just as most commentators doubted Tebow’s chances during this season, the draft prognosticators did not see any way he could be a first round pick. The Denver Broncos, of course, did pick him in the first round. Why? The reasoning that came from management, and then coach Josh McDaniels, is rather interesting. Instead of heavily emphasizing the quarterback’s ability to throw the ball, the Broncos labeled ten categories required to be a top-level quarterback. Some examples were perseverance, competitive spirit, poise, determination, work ethic, etc. Tebow did not possess throwing skills that would guarantee any draft selection, let alone a first round pick, but he did possess intangible elements in abundance.
Why am I talking about Tebow in my monthly golf tip? Well, first of all, my parents are from Denver, so I am a bit biased. Secondly, I believe many golfers are like those NFL organizations that decided not to draft Tim Tebow. Golfers value the long drive and not the nifty up and down. Golfers value visually pleasing golf swings and not ones that repeat over and over. Golfers overemphasize a player’s physical skills and not his/her mental toughness. Golfers simply underappreciate the intangibles in golf.
So, you probably know what kind of questions are coming next. Questions like: How is your short game? How much time has been spent on it? I teach ten driver lessons to every putting lesson. Is that good practice management? Hardly any of my students budget additional lessons for wedge play. Hardly anyone wants to talk about mental approach even though attitude can be your greatest asset or your worst liability. Why not talk a little about it? Don’t keep having those ‘blow up’ holes. Don’t miss that 4-footer on #18 more times than you care to remember. Stop blading important chips across the green. Are these errors swing flaws or mental miscues? If we are honest, the latter is more likely.
Start pursuing the intangibles in golf in 2012. When you take a lesson this year, tell me what really bugs you about your game. We can attack the swing flaws that are driving you crazy; let’s also spend equal time considering your mental approach and short game. Mental approach seminars and short-game lessons should be the staple of this winter season.
